Reducing School Stress

Though school has already begun,  your family might be still feeling the effects of returning after a long summer break. Here are some tips to make life easier for both parents and kids. You don’t have to use every tip listed below. In fact, I’d suggest that you pick only two or three tips and see how they help to lighten the load.

  • Developing a routine
    • Keep sleep schedules consistent – ensuring quality sleep for both you and your child can help with the everyday stresses of work and school
    • Have a healthy breakfast – we all need to start off the day with the right fuel. Add fruit to help provide an extra boost of energy
    • Make lunches the night before – getting tasks finished the night before frees up time in the morning
    • Use calendars or agendas to record important dates – knowing what’s been finished and what’s ahead helps keep things in check
  • Homework
    • Provide a quiet and clean space to do school work
    • Limit distractions – TV, YouTube, cell phones, and social media websites can pull focus away from school work
    • Encourage your child to ask the teacher for clarification if necessary
  • After-school activities
    • Pick an extracurricular activity. Keep things fun and simple – there are many activities that parents and kids can do together that don’t cost a lot of money. Try bike rides or visiting the park
    • Don’t let the weather keep you down – Family movie nights or game nights can make anyone forget the pouring rain
    • Reward your child for a job well-done with a fun activity with a friend
